About the Project
Turbo Golf Racing, developed by Hugecalf Studios, is a thrilling vehicular golf racing game where players control boost-enabled cars across various situations. Equipped with boosters and wings, players aim to reach the hole as fast as possible while navigating hazards and using power-ups like missiles and shields. The game offers both single-player and multiplayer modes, rewarding players with currency for unlocking cosmetic items and additional rewards through a Season Pass structure. Turbo Golf Racing delivers fast-paced racing action with strategic golf mechanics for an exciting gaming experience.
At the heart of our contribution to this project lies our commitment to crafting the foundation of exceptional user experience and elevating immersion to higher levels. We dedicated ourselves to laying the groundwork for a seamless and captivating journey for users, employing a repertoire of highly effective and time-tested UX/UI strategies, executed by our seasoned team of experts. Through planning, iterative design processes, and a keen eye for detail, we ensured that every interaction and interface element was tailored to enhance user engagement, foster intuitive navigation, and ultimately elevate the overall user experience.
The Challenge
Renowned for their immersive gameplay mechanics and engagingly crafted level design, sports games captivate audiences worldwide with their thrilling experiences. Inspired by this legacy, we at PUNCHev Group needed to introduce a dynamic and exhilarating UI design tailored specifically for Turbo Golf Racing, seamlessly blending the excitement of high-speed racing with the precision of golf, ensuring players are fully immersed in every pulse-pounding moment of the gameplay
In our systematic approach, we recognized the vital importance of a well-structured execution plan, that outlined clear sub-steps for each phase of this project. This involved breaking down the overarching objectives into distinct components, ensuring clarity and precision in our execution strategy. By clearly defining tasks and milestones, we ensured smooth progress and effective teamwork, fostering confidence and agility in navigating project complexities.
To the drawing board
When we got involved in the project, Turbo Golf Racing was an already working product with a set direction. That meant we needed to go through the existing concepts and work on improving from that point.
We went through the game and constructed a flowchart, pointing out the major points and every interaction, which is a part of the whole architecture of the game.
We then created with sketches which were a part of our suggestions for improvements of the flow. In the later stages we “dressed up” these sketch screens with the actual polished UI for a finished look of the flow.
Once we completed the previous step, we brainstormed the most optimal path for this project. We wanted to establish a set of rules that would best fit Turbo Golf Racing. To keep the interface consistent, we set a rule of perspective for the components, located on different parts of the screen. This rule was carried out in the majority of instances - the screens were separated into 3 parts - top, middle and bottom. Elements at the top and bottom are facing the ones, located in the middle.
The Wireframes
After establishing clear guides and rules, our next challenge was to create pixel-perfect wireframes. We firmly believe that highly detailed wireframes lay the groundwork for seamless UI refinement in later stages. With over 100 screens to design, we determined the optimal placement and logic for each UI component.
We applied the aforementioned logic of the “ perspective sandwich” which we formed in the earlier stage. Every design decision was based on the conventions from the industry and similar games, which ensured players are home when visiting Turbo Golf Racing.
We created several versions of each screen, in order to exhaust every possible way to optimize them. After careful consideration in terms of usability and accessibility, and consultation with our client, we picked one of the versions.
Sometimes we combined elements from multiple versions which we understood would best fit the game in the process. We explored different kinds of layouts and forms that infuse the spirit of dynamic sports games.
The Style Completion
The next phase was exploring the right style and treatments for the created high fidelity wireframes. As a part of our work process, we went through three styles, by creating three separate moodboards, which ranged from a light(clean) to a heavy. We essentially picked, with the guidance of our clients’ decisions, a combination of each style moodboard.
We wanted to have the energetic, “edgy” and sportsy spirit infused within the elements. That meant picking the right colors and textures which evoke a feeling of dynamic energy.
Every UI design looks unfinished without the set of right icons, which correspond to the game’s look and feel. That is why we created a set of respective icons that carry the dynamic spirit of Turbo Golf Racing. Every type of icon that was needed for each screen was created in several versions. Each version had its complexity and all of the icons from this version had a consistent look.
Some icons were static but some needed to be interactive, so we made sure all of the states and treatments were in line with the specific scenario in which each respective icon would be created.
The law and life
In the realm of UI design, animations are crucial for enhancing the user experience, adding depth and immersion to interactions. For Turbo Golf Racing, we crafted animations for each screen, ensuring they integrated into the game's environment.
Our animations were designed to resonate with the game's theme, infusing vitality and cohesion. Inspired by the fast-paced world of sports games, we formed dynamism and energy into every movement, from button bounces to screen transitions.
Through iteration and refinement, each animation became a natural extension of the gameplay experience, contributing to the vibrancy and cohesiveness of Turbo Golf Racing's interface. Each of our created asset was improved in such a way that it looks like a live organism, part of the ecosystem of the game.
Upon completion of our designs, we transitioned to the asset preparation phase. With an eye toward ensuring uniformity in future UI component additions, we compiled a comprehensive style guide document. This detailed guide, featuring color coding, shapes, grid systems, and other defining characteristics, serves to streamline the process for future asset creation, maximizing efficiency and maintaining consistency across all elements.
